My Story
Where It Began
At 15, I received my stepfather’s old Praktica camera. I was instantly captivated – not just by photography itself, but by the way light, movement, and fleeting expressions could transform an ordinary moment into something quietly powerful.
I began noticing details others overlooked. That instinct – to observe deeply – has never left me.
The Artistic Foundation
Creativity runs in my family. My mother, a talented craftswoman, encouraged me to trust my artistic instincts. I first studied fashion in the Netherlands, where I grew up, before realizing that photography and graphic design were where my true focus belonged. I went on to study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague, where I refined both my technical skills and my artistic voice.
The Independent Path
After graduation, I worked briefly at a photographic stock agency before choosing the independent path. For over a decade, I ran my own creative business in Amsterdam, building experience not only behind the camera, but as an entrepreneur and visual storyteller.
In 2018, I left Amsterdam after 17 years to begin a quieter chapter in Canada. The open landscapes and slower rhythm of life deepened my appreciation for stillness – something that continues to influence the way I photograph today.
What Sets Kwaak Photography Apart
I don’t see portraits as simple images. I see them as carefully composed works that reflect character, depth, and nuance. Every session is intentional – from our first conversation to the final edit. I guide the process thoughtfully, creating space for you to feel at ease while ensuring the result feels refined and artistic.

A Personal Approach
The strongest photographs emerge when people feel understood. Whether I’m creating atmospheric, art-driven portraits or capturing the quiet connection between people and their pets, my approach remains the same: attentive, considered, and collaborative. I pay close attention to detail – in light, composition, and expression – so that what we create feels honest rather than posed.

More Than an Image
Photography, for me, is about presence. It’s about slowing down long enough to see what is already there – strength, softness, personality, connection – and preserving it with care. If you value imagery that feels thoughtful and lasting rather than fleeting, we may be a good fit.
